Why heating pipes burst in Chicopee
Many Chicopee homes heat with a boiler and hot-water baseboard or radiators. Those heating loops are full of water, and when the boiler stops, the loops along exterior walls cool fastest. The usual causes:
- The oil ran out. About one Chicopee home in five heats with oil. A missed delivery in a cold snap stops the boiler.
- The power went out. Even a gas or oil boiler needs electricity for its pump and controls.
- The boiler locked out. A failed igniter, a tripped safety or a clogged filter shuts it down while you are at work.
- A zone stopped circulating. A stuck zone valve leaves one loop cold while the rest of the house is warm.
- The house was empty. Vacant units and homes between owners freeze first.

Signs a heating loop froze or burst
- Baseboard in one room stays cold while others heat
- The boiler pressure gauge drops, or the boiler keeps calling for water
- Water on the floor below a baseboard, or a ceiling stain under it
- Banging or no circulation after the heat comes back
What to do now
- Turn the boiler off if a heating pipe is leaking.
- Shut the main water valve. Many boilers refill automatically and will keep feeding a leak.
- Keep other pipes from freezing. Open cabinet doors and drip faucets until heat is back.
- Do not use open flames to thaw pipes.
- Call us. (413) 603-1274.
One call: pipes repaired, water dried
- Find every split. A frozen loop can crack in more than one place, often inside the baseboard cover or the wall behind it.
- Repair the pipe. Split copper and damaged baseboard element sections are cut out and replaced.
- Fix the supply side. Domestic water pipes that froze in the same cold spell are checked and repaired too.
- Dry the damage. Floors, walls and ceilings below the leak are dried and checked with moisture readings.
- Get heat back safely. We tell you whether the boiler needs a heating technician before it is refilled and restarted.
Does insurance cover a frozen heating pipe?
Most policies cover sudden water damage, but many exclude freezing damage if the home was not kept heated or the system was not drained while vacant. Running out of oil is a gray area, and insurers will ask what happened. Keep delivery records and thermostat details. See burst pipe insurance in Massachusetts and vacant house burst pipe insurance. Help with heating costs
If a missed oil delivery was about money, Valley Opportunity Council in Chicopee runs fuel assistance and a heating system repair program for eligible homeowners. Applying before winter can prevent the next freeze.
Heating water is different from tap water
The water in a boiler loop has been circulating for years. It is often dark, can carry rust and sludge, and may contain antifreeze in homes where it was added for protection. It stains carpet and plaster more than clean tap water, and the stain can bleed back through new paint if the surface is not sealed. When a heating pipe bursts, carpet and pad in its path are more likely to be replaced, and walls get a stain-blocking primer before painting.
Keeping it from happening again
- Automatic oil delivery, so a missed order does not leave the tank dry in January
- A low-temperature alarm or smart thermostat that alerts your phone if the house gets cold
- Insulating baseboard loops that run along cold outside walls or over a porch
- Having the boiler serviced each fall, before the first cold snap
Heating pipe questions
How long before baseboard pipes freeze with no heat?
It depends on the outside temperature and the wall. In single digits, pipes along exterior walls can freeze within several hours of the heat going off.
Can I thaw a frozen baseboard myself?
Gentle heat on the room helps. Never use a torch. If the boiler is off with low pressure or you see water, call us before restarting it.
Do you fix the boiler?
We repair the frozen and burst piping and dry the house. If the boiler itself needs service, we will tell you so you can have it checked before it runs.
