The main signs of a burst pipe inside a wall are a hissing or dripping sound with no faucet on, a stain or bubbling paint that spreads, water at the bottom of the wall or on the floor below, and a water meter that keeps moving with everything off. If you see two or more, shut the main valve and call (413) 603-1274.
What to look and listen for
- Sound: hissing, spraying or dripping inside the wall, loudest at night when the house is quiet
- Stains: a wet patch that darkens or spreads, often brown on plaster
- Paint: bubbles, blisters or peeling in one area
- Softness: drywall that dents or plaster that crumbles when pressed
- Baseboards and floors: swelling trim, wet carpet edges, cupping wood
- The room below: a ceiling stain or drip under the wall
- Pressure: weak flow at fixtures fed by that wall
- Smell: musty air in one room
The meter test
- Turn off every faucet and appliance that uses water.
- Watch the small leak dial on the water meter for two minutes.
- If it moves, water is leaking somewhere. If you hear water in a wall at the same time, that is very likely the spot.
Timing tells you a lot
In Chicopee, walls on the outside of the house, back porches of two- and three-deckers and kitchen and bathroom walls freeze in cold snaps. A pipe that froze overnight often leaks only after the ice melts, a day or two later. If the signs show up after a deep freeze, assume a burst. See why pipes burst when they thaw.
What happens next
We confirm the leak with moisture readings, open a small section right at it, fix the pipe and dry the wall cavity. See burst pipe in wall repair and leak detection.
Which walls to check first
- Walls behind kitchen sinks, especially on the outside of the house
- Walls behind showers, tubs and toilets
- The wall between the kitchen and an enclosed porch
- Walls next to the water heater, washer and boiler
- Any outside wall with a pipe that has frozen before
A drip or a burst?
A pipe that split in a freeze usually leaks fast once it thaws: a stain that spreads in hours, water at the baseboard, a sound like a running faucet. A slow leak from a worn fitting or pinhole shows up over weeks: a faint stain that grows slowly, a musty smell, flaking paint. Both need fixing, but a fast leak needs the main shut off right away, and the two are treated differently by insurers. See slow leak vs sudden burst.
Do not open the wall yourself first
Cutting into a wet wall can hit wiring, and in older homes the paint may contain lead. Shut off the water and take photos. An opening in the right place, after readings, is smaller and easier to patch.
Questions
What does a burst pipe sound like?
A steady hiss or spray for a pressure line, or dripping and trickling. It does not stop when fixtures are off.
Can a pipe leak in a wall for weeks?
A small leak can, which is why stains, smells and the water bill are worth watching. See how to tell if water is inside your walls.
