Signs the pipe burst inside the wall

A pipe that splits behind plaster or drywall rarely shows up as a gush. It shows up as small clues that get worse by the hour. If you see two or more of these, treat it as a burst pipe and call now.

  • Hissing or dripping sound inside a wall when no faucet is on
  • Paint bubbling, a wet stain spreading, or plaster turning soft and dark
  • Water at the bottom of the wall, along the baseboard, or on the floor below
  • Low water pressure upstairs after a cold night
  • The water meter dial still turning with every tap closed
  • A musty smell in a room that was dry last week

Not sure where the water is coming from? Our page on signs of a burst pipe in the wall walks through each clue.

What to do in the next 10 minutes

  1. Shut the main water valve. In most Chicopee homes it sits in the basement where the line comes through the front wall, next to the meter. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. See how to shut off the main water valve if you cannot find it.
  2. Cut power to wet areas. If water is near outlets, switches or the electrical panel, turn those breakers off. If the panel itself is wet, stay out and call 911.
  3. Open a faucet on the lowest floor. This drains the pipes so less water keeps feeding the leak.
  4. Move what you can. Pull furniture, rugs and boxes away from the wall.
  5. Take photos and video. Your insurer will want to see the wall, the floor and the ceiling below before anything is torn out.
  6. Call us. Stay on the line and we will talk you through anything you are not sure about while we are on the way.
If the main valve will not close

Old gate valves in Chicopee basements often stick or leak past the handle. Do not force it with a wrench until it snaps. Call us, and if water is pouring, ask the Chicopee Water Department to shut the water at the street. Our guide covers what to do when the main valve will not shut off.

One call: we fix the pipe and dry the wall

Most people end up calling two companies for a burst pipe in a wall: a plumber to stop the leak and a water damage company to dry it out. Each one has to come out, look, and schedule. Water Damage Pro does both on the same job.

  1. Find the break without tearing up the whole wall. We use moisture meters to trace where the water is, then open a small, clean section right at the leak.
  2. Fix the pipe. We cut out the split section plus the swollen pipe on each side of it. Frozen copper often bulges for a foot or more past the visible crack, so a patch right at the split can fail again.
  3. Test it under pressure. We turn the water back on slowly, bleed the air, and watch the repair before we close anything.
  4. Dry the wall cavity, not just the surface. Air movers and dehumidifiers dry the studs, insulation and plaster. We log moisture readings until the materials are back to normal.
  5. Remove what cannot be saved. Soaked insulation and crumbling plaster come out. Firm plaster and lath can often be dried in place.
  6. Close it up. Once the readings say dry, the wall can be patched and painted.

Why walls in Chicopee homes burst

About a quarter of Chicopee homes were built before 1940, and the median house in the city dates to 1958. Many are two- and three-deckers in Willimansett, Chicopee Center and Chicopee Falls, where supply pipes run up exterior walls and through unheated back porches and stairwells. When a cold snap pushes overnight lows near zero, those runs freeze first.

The break often comes on the thaw, not during the cold. Ice blocks the pipe, pressure builds behind it, and the copper splits. You only see water when the ice melts and the line flows again. That is why Chicopee crews get the most burst-pipe calls one to three days after a deep freeze, as they did after the February 2015, 2016 and 2023 cold snaps. Read more in our Chicopee frozen pipes guide.

Plaster and lath hold water longer than drywall. Old plaster walls look dry on the surface while the lath and studs behind them stay wet for days. That is how mold starts out of sight. Drying with meters, not guesswork, is what keeps a wall from coming back musty in the spring.

Burst pipe in a two- or three-decker

When a pipe breaks in the wall of an upstairs unit, the water rarely stays put. It runs down the wall cavity and comes out in the ceiling and walls of the unit below. One break can mean two or three households, one owner and more than one insurance policy. We check every floor the water reached, not just the unit that called. Landlords and tenants can see who usually pays on our page about apartment and multi-family water damage.

Will insurance cover a burst pipe in the wall?

Most Massachusetts homeowner policies cover sudden water damage from a pipe that bursts. Many exclude freezing damage if the home was not kept heated or was left vacant, and the policy may pay for the damage but not the pipe itself. Check your own policy. To help your claim:

  • Report the loss to your insurer right away
  • Keep photos and video from before any work starts
  • Keep the cut-out section of pipe if you can
  • Ask us for the moisture readings and photos from the job

Burst pipe in wall questions

How fast should a burst pipe in a wall be fixed?

Right away. Once the water is shut off the flooding stops, but the wall keeps soaking. Wet plaster, wood and insulation can start growing mold within 24 to 48 hours, so drying should start the same day the pipe is fixed.

Do you have to open the whole wall?

No. We trace the water with moisture meters first, then open a small section at the leak. Larger openings are only needed when insulation is soaked or the plaster has failed.

Can I turn the water back on after the main is shut?

Not until the broken pipe is repaired or capped. Turning it back on feeds the leak again. If you need water in the meantime, tell us when you call and we will cap the line so the rest of the house can run.

Is a push-fit fitting a real repair?

Push-fit fittings can be a lasting repair when the pipe is cut square, cleaned, deburred and seated to the right depth. Inside a closed wall we often choose a soldered or crimped joint. See are push-fit repairs permanent.

What if the water came through the ceiling below?

Then the wall cavity and the ceiling both need drying. A sagging ceiling can hold a lot of water, so stay out from under it. Our ceiling water damage repair page explains what we do there.
