The Burnett Road neighborhood
Burnett Road is Chicopee's most separate neighborhood, on the east side of the city near Chicopee Memorial State Park and the Cooley Brook Reservoir, with the Massachusetts Turnpike running nearby. It is mostly single-family homes on larger lots, many newer than the mill-era housing in the older villages, but still with basements, water heaters and long runs of pipe on outside walls.
Being a bit out of the way means two things for water damage. When a pipe bursts while you are at work or away, it may run longer before anyone notices. And when the power goes out in a winter storm, wooded streets can be among the last to come back, which leaves pipes without heat.
What we fix around Burnett Road
- Pipes that froze during winter power outages
- Burst lines found after coming home from work or a trip
- Water heater and washer hose failures
- Outdoor faucet lines split inside the wall
- Hidden leaks behind finished basements
Away for the day or the week?
Keep the heat at least in the mid-60s, drip faucets on outside walls in a cold snap, and shut the main valve before a trip. An automatic shut-off valve can stop a burst while nobody is home. See what temperature to keep your house when you are away and do automatic water shutoff valves work.
Power out in a cold snap
If the power is out and the house is cooling, decide early. If it may be out overnight in single digits, shutting the main valve and opening faucets to drain the lines can save the house. See how long before pipes freeze without heat.

Leak sensors and smart shut-off valves
For a home where a leak may run for hours before anyone sees it, technology helps. There are three levels, from cheapest to most protective:
| Option | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Battery leak alarms | Beep when water touches the sensor | Under sinks, by the water heater and washer, when someone is home to hear it |
| Wi-Fi leak sensors | Send an alert to your phone | Owners who travel or work long days |
| Automatic shut-off valve | Closes the main when a leak or unusual flow is detected | Homes left empty, finished basements, second homes |
An automatic shut-off valve is installed on the main line just after the meter. Some insurers offer a discount for them, so ask your agent. They need power or a battery backup, and they should be tested a couple of times a year. See do automatic water shut-off valves work.
Low-temperature alerts
A burst pipe usually starts with a heating problem. A smart thermostat or a simple Wi-Fi temperature sensor that texts you when the house drops below 50°F gives you time to act before pipes freeze, whether the cause is a power outage, an empty oil tank or a boiler that locked out. It is one of the cheapest ways to protect a house that sits empty during the day.
Finished basements and newer homes
Homes near Burnett Road are often newer and more likely to have finished basements, PEX plumbing and a sump pump. PEX handles a freeze better than copper, but its fittings can pull apart, and a failed sump pump during a storm can flood a finished basement fast. A battery backup for the sump pump and a high-water alarm in the pit are both worth having. See flooded basement cleanup.
Second-floor laundry rooms
Newer and remodeled homes often put the washer upstairs near the bedrooms. It is convenient, but a burst hose or a clogged drain there sends water straight through the ceiling of the rooms below. Before you leave on a trip, turn off the washer valves. Make sure the washer sits in a drain pan with a drain line if possible, replace rubber hoses with braided stainless, and put a leak sensor on the floor beside it. A pan does not stop a burst hose, but it catches slow drips and warns you early. If the ceiling below a laundry room ever shows a stain, check the drain hose and the valves first. See appliance and supply line leaks.
