Stop the water, move furniture off the wet area, and call (413) 603-1274. The faster the water comes out of the pad, the better the chance of saving the carpet.
Can wet carpet be saved?
Often, yes, when three things are true:
- The water was clean. A burst supply pipe, a water heater or a washer hose. Sewage, floor drain backups and outside flood water are different: carpet touched by those is usually thrown out.
- It was caught fast. Within a day or two, before the backing separates and the smell sets in.
- It is dried from both sides. The carpet, the pad and the floor underneath all have to dry.
The pad is the weak point. It holds water like a sponge and is cheap to replace, so in most cases we replace the pad and save the carpet.
What to do before we arrive
- Stop the water at the main valve.
- Move furniture off the carpet, or put foil or blocks under the legs so wood stain and rust do not transfer.
- Pick up rugs, papers and anything that can bleed dye.
- Do not use a household vacuum on wet carpet.
- Photograph the wet area and the source.
- Call us. (413) 603-1274.
How we dry carpet
- Fix the source. The pipe or line is repaired on the same visit.
- Extract. Weighted extraction pulls water out of the carpet and pad far better than a shop vac.
- Lift and replace the pad where it is soaked, and check the subfloor under it.
- Float the carpet. Air movers dry it from underneath while dehumidifiers remove the water from the room.
- Check readings on the carpet, the subfloor and the walls next to it.
- Reinstall and stretch once everything is dry.
Finished basements and upper floors in Chicopee
Most wet carpet calls in Chicopee are in finished basements, where a burst pipe near the front wall or a failed water heater spreads water under the carpet before anyone notices. In two- and three-deckers it is often the carpet in a lower unit, soaked by a pipe that burst upstairs. Carpet on a concrete basement floor dries more slowly because the slab keeps feeding moisture, so the room has to be dehumidified properly. See flooded basement cleanup.
When carpet should go
- The water came from a sewer, a floor drain or outside flooding
- It sat wet for several days and smells
- The backing has separated or the carpet has shrunk and buckled
- There is visible mold on the back of the carpet or the pad
Carpet over hardwood
Many Chicopee homes have wall-to-wall carpet laid over the original hardwood. When the carpet soaks, the wood underneath soaks too, and it can cup or buckle if the carpet is left down. In these rooms the pad usually comes out so the floor can dry, and the carpet is either dried separately or pulled back and floated with air. The hardwood gets its own moisture readings. Sometimes a homeowner learns there is good oak under the carpet and decides not to put carpet back. See hardwood floor water damage.
Why the pad is the problem
Carpet itself is fairly tough. The pad underneath is a sponge. It holds water against the floor, takes a long time to dry, and is where odor and mold start. It is also cheap compared to the carpet. That is why the usual approach is to replace the pad and save the carpet when the water was clean and drying starts within a day or two. You can test it yourself: press on the carpet with your hand. If water comes up around your fingers, the pad is saturated.
Area rugs
Lift area rugs off a wet floor right away. They trap water underneath and dye from the rug can bleed into wood or carpet. Valuable or wool rugs should go to a rug cleaner who can dry them properly.
Wet carpet questions
How long does carpet take to dry?
With extraction and the right equipment, usually two to four days. Left to air dry, a soaked pad can stay wet for weeks.
Can I dry it with fans?
Fans dry the top. The pad and the floor under it stay wet. See can fans dry water damage.
Will the carpet smell afterward?
Not if it was clean water and was dried quickly. A smell means water stayed too long, usually in the pad.
Does insurance pay for new carpet?
If the water damage is covered, carpet that cannot be saved usually is too. See burst pipe insurance. General information only.
